Artist uses old-fashioned photography for Native American collection

BISMARCK, N.D. - A Bismarck artist is showcasing his old-fashioned wet plate photography of Native Americans.

Shane Balkowitsch has taken 145 pictures for his Northern Plains Native Americans: A Modern Wet Plate Perspective collection. Using a wet plate camera, the photo is captured as silver on a piece of glass.

"There's no filters, there's no photoshop,” said Balkowitsch. “These are just raw images that are using 165 year old technology to create."

His goal is to capture 1,000 of the photos. Balkowitsch's exhibition runs through Nov. 22 at the Bismarck Art and Galleries Association.
