Sports Spotlight on Thorson Twins | Video

Lee Timmerman | 10/3/2012

From afar the Bismarck players look similar, but up close there`s a pair of BHS seniors you`ll have a hard time telling apart. Twins, Jamie and Justin Thorson.

"I can`t tell you which one is which and I go by numbers. I go by 84 and I go by 57," said coach Mark Gibson.

Justin, number 84, starts both ways, at tight end and defensive end.

"On pass plays my job is to go to get the quarterback and rush the quarterback so I love doing that," he said.

Jamie, number 57, is a two year starter at guard.

"A big thing is getting off the ball, staying low and using your momentum against some of the bigger guys that have the size on you," he said.

"The other one would be a very good defender for us but we`re so thin on the offensive line that he`s to valuable for us at guard and we can`t do that," Gibson said.

Like most twins, if you see one of them you usually do not have to look hard to find the other.

"Everywhere we go, we`re pretty much together so it can cause a lot of fighting, but yes," Jamie said.

"If they go one on one I was afraid they would both kill each other just trying to prove a point of which one is the tougher one. We kind of said no to that," Gibson said.

"Just the competitive nature between us. Nobody wants to be the twin to lose," Justin said.

Which leads us to the facial hair.

"We have a little competition there too so we`ll see who`s can get longer but it`s pretty even right now," Justin said.

"That`s another way to tell them apart is one has a little bit shaggier beard than the other but if they`re both shaved and clean cut I can`t tell which one is which," Gibson said.

But who will judge the winner of the their beard competition?

"I don`t know I`m not sure about that one maybe we`ll let our parents decide that one, I`m not sure," Justin said.

I`m pretty sure this rivalry between the two has made each a better player.

"In the off-season, lifting it gets competitive so we kind of push each other so it almost helps us out in a way," Justin said.

"He`s pretty tough but I`m tougher," Jamie said.

That`s a question that we may never know the answer to, but the Demons are sure benefiting from it.

The Thorson twins and their Demons teammates are the top ranked team in the state. Bismarck is hosting Mandan tomorrow night.
