The Saint Mary`s boys basketball team surprised many last season, that will not be the case this year. The Saints were picked to finish near the bottom in the WDA but finished third in the region and sixth at state. The team had three sophomores in the starting lineup and they were led by one of them., second team all-state player Ben Weisbeck.

"I think we arrived probably a year earlier than we thought and a lot of people thought. We had a lot of young guys step up and really mix in well with the seniors that we did have and so first tie making state in eight years and a big jump for us and the program brought a lot of excitement to what we were trying to do and it`s a good thing for us," said head coach Joe Mueller.

The hoopster says the Saints should second in WDA this year which would get them to state again but the team has bigger goals in mind.

"As long as we keep our mindset and keep doing what we`re doing. I think we can get there as long as we keep our heads on straght and we don`t forget what our main goal is and that`s to win a state championship," said junior Ben Weisbeck.

St. Marys gets started tonight at home against Belcourt.
