"It`s prep week. Our staff will have everything ready to go."
The shear number of players in uniform at Century this fall is staggering. A hundred and thirty-five kids grade 9 through 12. Obviously, only 22 of those guys can start, so the biggest benefit seems to be on the practice field.
Ron Wingenbach, `If you watch our practices this year compared to the last couple years, just the competition for spots is huge and any time you have that competition it makes practices better, a little more efficient, sharper, and it should carry over to the high school games."
Riley Riehl, "Last year we had a lot of guys go both ways where this year we have a lot of starters that can play one-way and it`s going to be a lot different having a bunch of guys above that 250 to 300 range that can walk on in there and play."
What makes Century so intimidating this fall isn`t the quantity of guys on the roster, but rather, the quality. The Patriots return almost all of their skilled position players, so as opposed to last fall, the team has already implemented a more complex scheme.
Deion Volk, "Everybody knows what they`re doing and we get through practice quicker and the tempo`s a lot higher cause we don`t go guys going, `I don`t know what to do`, so practice is a lot better, more efficient.
Where Century still has some question marks is on the offensive and defensive fronts. They`ve got the numbers and size but still lack much experience.
Riehl, "It`s just a matter of getting guys adjusted from the transition from sophomore to JV or JV to varsity. We have a lot of guys that want to play and that can play. It`s just a matter of getting them acclimated to the varsity attitude."
Nats..."Tackle, tackle, tight"
Wingenbach, "I think it all starts up front. The maturation of our offensive line will be critical and if we can solidify the offensive and defensive lines, I think everything will fall into place."
And if that`s the case, the Patriots feel they should be in the mix come November.
Nats...."Patriots. Who are we? Patriots. Who are we?"
Wingenbach, "This year`s seniors have experienced that, and they certainly want to get back to that same game again, so it`s really rubbed off on the underclassmen. It`s been a good fall camp."
Now that it`s game week, Century is hoping it carries over to Friday night. The Patriots open the season with a non-region game at Fargo South.
