The Beavers women`s soccer team showed some swagger in the wee hours of the morning.
Jason Spain`s squad believes it can be in the hunt for a conference crown as MSU moves into the Northern Sun.
Minot State went 5-3-2 against current NSIC teams in its first year.
And this team is even deeper after a string of red shirts last season.
"We redshirted our seniors. We brought `em back," Spain says about the depth. "And I also think that playing all the freshmen gave them a year of not just coming off the bench freshmen, but a year of starting freshmen."
"So much of soccer is chemistry. And our team has such good chemistry now," senior midfielder Lexy Kidd says. "Just because we`re family basically. We`re all out here on our own, and that`s so important in soccer."
Minot State opens the regular season as the early game of a soccer-football doubleheader at Herb Parker Stadium on Thursday, August 30th.
On the volleyball court, to describe the Beavers as young is an understatement.
MSU has just four players back from last years team and 10 freshmen on the roster.
The NSIC coaches have Minot State tied for last place in the preseason poll with U-Mary, a team the Beavers beat twice last year.
"This next 13 or 14 days that we run through practice are going to be absolutely key to finding out whether this team can compete this year," head coach Travis Ward says, "as a group and then also waling into the Northern Sun and seeing if we can compete against them."
"It`s just gonna take some time for everyone to get used to our system and learn what coach wants and expects of us," sophomore setter Emily Byrne says.
Also of note from this morning`s practice: junior outside hitter Jen Dixon is sidelined with a foot injury.
She was named the team`s preseason player to watch by the NSIC.
Her status for the season is unknown.
