The Dakota Poker League | Video
Cliff Naylor
5/4/2007
The Dakota Poker League has grown in spades the past three years. Thousands of amateur and professional card sharks are seated into the organization`s games every week. This type of gaming has become popular with thousands of the state`s gamblers because the financial risk is dealt out of Texas Hold`em when the game is played as part of the Dakota Poker League.

"You get the chips for free and the rest is up to you."

Brook Lyter started the weekly statewide card game three years ago and he says the pot of players who participate has grown so much that the league has expanded into South Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska.

"This is a great way for people to have fun and to play poker without gambling, without risking any money whatsoever."

Every week over sixty bars in North Dakota sponsor league games where players start out with 2500 free chips. At the end of the night, points are award to the winners, and running totals are kept over a twelve week period, with the highest cumulative scorers from each site advancing to the state finals.

Because there`s no chance of losing any money Mitch Schock says the league has attracted lots of novice poker players.

"It`s a great place to learn to play poker."

Schock says players who are new to the game learn the three things it takes to win from veterans like David Delaplane.

"Patience, position and poise, a lot of poise

Delaplane plays almost every week, hoping to earn enough points to be seated as a regional champion at this weekends championship tournament in Fargo. The winner of that event is awarded enough cash to buy into the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. The cost of a seat at that high stakes game is $10,000 in real money.

The weekly statewide point standings are posted on the league`s website along with the winners of the year round tournaments. For more information, go to dakotapokerleague.com
