Reaction to New Pope | Video

Kristin Clouston | 3/13/2013

More than a billion Catholics around the world are celebrating the election of Pope Francis the First. Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina is the first to be elected pope from the Americas. One of the first things the new Pope said is that he wants people to pray for him.

We talked to Bishop David Kagan this afternoon. He said he was elated to see the white smoke, and anxiously waited for the Cardinal to come out and announce the name of the Pope. The Bishop says he hasn`t met Pope Francis in person but explained he`s very well known throughout both North and South America. Much like his namesake, Pope Francis chose to work among the poor.

"He was very devoted to the care of all the people, Catholics and people who aren`t Catholics in his arch diocese in many charitable ways, in ways that try to elevate the standard of living for the people. He has I think some very good experience working with government officials and I think that`s kind of an art not everyone has."

For many years he lived in a small room heated by a stove and took the bus to work. He is the first to take the name Francis and the first Jesuit priest to be elected.
