Baby Boomer Exercise Program | Video

Julie Leonardi | 3/6/2013

Minot State University is working on a study that shows the importance of exercise for baby-boomers. Sixty-eight people, ages ranging from 50 to 67 have volunteered to participate in the study. These people didn`t exercise at all, or only worked out sporadically. They all went through initial testing before the workouts started.

Half the group takes a body pump class twice a week and the other half does yoga. The study hopes to show which workout is more beneficial, and what helps the most with balance. Other than some sore muscles in the beginning of the study, all the feedback has been positive.

Carol Rubbelke said, “It was a kick in the butt! But I’m going to start working out more now.”

Dr. Terry Eckmann, Minot State University professor, explained why they came up with the study. “If you use yoga training, what is it going to do for you? And if you use body pump training, what’s that going to do for you both cognitively and physically.”

Heather Golly, Minot State University Assistant professor, said the feedback she’s heard has been positive. “They can bend over and tie their shoes, they’re feeling stronger, and that they`re really enjoying the social atmosphere of it.”

MSU students are also participating in the study, and it’s now halfway through. They will have the final results in early April.
