According to Minot State Sociology Professor Dr. Jynette Larshus, she says the Sequester could affect education and the defense budget, including civilian contracts. But, as she explains, North Dakota may be in better shape than other states, thanks to the oil boom.
"One of our off-setting factors is weather or not the oil boom and the money that is being put in the western part of the state and in jobs related to that can off-set some of these other cuts in income that we are seeing in other areas,” she said. “So, potentially it could be off-setting. So, we might have a best case scenario of equilibrium. We might be bringing in enough in the western part of the region to off-set what we lost."
Dr. Larshus says the next economic hurdle will come when Congress introduces the federal budget for the fiscal year on March 27.
