Now, hooping has become a worldwide movement. There are festivals and communities designed specifically for hoopers or anyone who wants to learn. There are no specific moves, it`s really just however you feel like dancing while moving a hula hoop around.
It looks easy, but believe me, it takes a lot of practice. Log on to www.hooping.org for more information and to see how you can get involved! Or follow them on Twitter @hoopingdotorg.
Trending locally, I met a young woman who is professional hooper right here in Bismarck. If you`re from the Bismarck area, you`ve probably seen her practicing outside. Lydia Davis is a 20 year old college student who has been hooping for three years. She has a pretty extensive dance and music background, so it`s almost as if she was born for this.
She says the shapes and sizes of hoop vary by the person. Some hoopers even make their own. Lydia not only hoops with plastic hoops, but she can hoop with fire!
Lydia says, frankly, hooping just makes her happy. "It`s one of my passions. It`s really fun for me and I love fire. My goal is to start my own hoop troop and maybe travel around to different concerts and perform."
Lydia finds time out of her busy schedule every day to practice and would also someday love to teach others how to hoop. She says it`s all about having fun and while you`re doing it, you don`t even realize what a great work out it can be.
I would also recommend NOT trying the fire hooping at home, that takes a lot of practice.
