Parents On Facebook | Video

Sarahbeth Ackerman | 2/20/2013

More and more people are joining the world of social media and that includes mom and dad. Logging onto social networking sites like Facebook is almost second nature nowadays.

"We are so social now. And, we share everything from what we have for breakfast, to our animals, pets, and clothing," said Facebook user Stephanie George.

Because younger generations are sharing almost everything online, more parents are logging onto Facebook to keep tabs on their children. A recent study by Education Database Online found that 43 percent of parents admitted to checking their child`s Facebook profile on a daily basis.

"I think they are just being parents and trying to get in more on the social media aspect of things. Stay current. But, it`s just not happening with me," said George.

For George, she said her parents have been pretty persistent when it comes to asking to accept their friend request. "I just refused basically. I talk to them on a regular basis. And, we keep in touch. I send them pictures via text, but I figure Facebook is off limits to them."

George still hasn`t accepted her parent’s friend request, that hasn`t stopped some parents from finding other ways to keep tabs on their children activity.

"We sometimes get parents who come in and are looking for some kind of tool in which they can monitor their kid’s computer use," said Mark Jantzer, General Manager at The Computer Store.

There is not a specific tool for parents to use, but Jantzer suggests keeping a home computer where the parents can monitor their kid’s internet usage.

"A lot of parents like to know what their kids are doing and who they are in contact with. And, they want to make sure they are doing those things in a fun, safe way."

Not all parents are trying to spy on their kids. Many of them just want to stay connected by using the tools their children are using.

Right now, there are more than 17 million Facebook users who are under the age of 13.
