Snow Removal Costs | Video

Alex Hagan | 2/14/2013

While this winter has been more brutal than last, it has still been a mild season compared to previous years. That means public works departments are not spending as much time plowing roads. Public works employees say they spend more than $2,500 for every inch of snow.

Snow plows will only run if there are more than 3 inches of snow on the ground. The idea is to save money for jobs done during the spring and summer time.

"We`ll spend a lot of money on asphalt repair come spring time. That`s primarily where most of the money goes and any money that`s left over we retain in our cash reserves and we`re able to utilize them for purchase or replacement of vehicles," said Jeff Heintz with Bismarck Public Works.

Heintz says they usually have a cash reserve in case there is a lot of snowfall.
