Omar Kalmio Trial: Day Two | Video

Julie Leonardi | 1/29/2013

On January 28, 2011, the body of Sabrina Zephier was found, along with her mother, brother and her mother`s boyfriend. Sabrina Zephier`s sister, Terri Zephier, was called to testify Tuesday morning.

She described how she found out about the death of her family and told the prosecutors about the volatile relationship Omar Kalmio and her sister had. She read a Facebook conversation aloud to the court room.

“Please come ASAP. He will start hitting me again, he’s crazy.”

She also admitted to her mother`s history of drug use, but said she had no dealers as enemies. Drugs were found in the urine of all the victims except Sabrina.

Dale Maixner, North Dakota BCI Special Agent, was brought in to testify. He said after interviewing over 200 people, there was only one suspect.

"Did you develop any suspects?”

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“One.”

“Who?”

“Mr.Kalmio."

Kerry Rosenquist attempted to find out if the questioning officers were biased because of Kalmio`s criminal history.

Maixner also said that no physical evidence was found at the crime scene or in Kalmio`s company truck. There was no knowledge of Kalmio owning a gun.

The last few hours of the trial focused on forensic DNA. The trial continues for the rest of the week at Ward County Court House.
