Democrats` Response to State of the State | Video

Retha Colclasure | 1/8/2013

Democrats say some of the Governor`s proposals are good, some aren`t good enough and some were completely wrong. They say now that the legislative session is underway, it`s time for the work to begin.

They say the Governor`s proposal of five million dollars to help fix the child care problem isn`t nearly enough money. They say $25 million is more like it. And they say the Governor didn`t even address the needs of small hospitals in rural parts of the state.

Democratic leaders say they agree with the Governor that there needs to be tax cuts, but say Dalrymple`s focus isn`t in the right place.

"The Governor has identified $25 million in corporate income tax cuts. The way most North Dakota small businesses are structured, they don`t pay corporate income taxes. So we`re talking about tax relief for corporations like Walmart," said Sen. Mac Schneider (D-Grand Forks).

Democrats say several of the issues facing the state aren`t partisan issues, and don`t have a party solution. They say they hope to be able to move good ideas forward, no matter which side of the aisle they come from.
