Flood Related Property Acquisitions | Video

Julie Leonardi | 12/27/2012

Another milestone in flood recovery is made today. The first round of voluntary home acquisitions has been completed. Eighty-seven homes have chosen to participate and 57 of them have closed or are scheduled to be closed. This means the city will own those homes and have better access to the flood levy.

Recovery is a long process, and this is just another step forward in future flood protection said Dan Jonasson from Minot Public Works.

“Those homes are built close to the dikes, so it was difficult to get in there with equipment. What this will do is when these houses are taken down, the property`s opened up and it becomes a property of the city. We`ll have clear access to those dikes, so if we need to fight a flood in the interim, until a more permanent flood project is completed, we`ll have a better ability to fight a flood.”

The rest of the closings should be finished by the beginning of next year.
