Men`s Shelter to Open Soon | Video

Joel Porter | 12/17/2012

By this time next month, people with no homes in Bismarck won`t have to sleep out in the cold. The Ruth Meiers House plans to open its new Horizons Emergency Men`s Shelter in January. Ruth Meiers staff is waiting on final design approval from the city for work at 305 north 23rd street.

The job was expected to be finished by Christmas, but supervisors say the plumbing and other interior work needs to be finished. Executive director Jaclyn Bugbee says they`ve added eight additional beds in the past few weeks, so they haven`t had to turn people away.

"Which has been able to alleviate some of the stress that we have on our overnight shelter. And so that`s kind of giving us a little bit of a buffer space as we move into this new structure."

The Horizons emergency shelter is expected to begin housing men in the middle of January. Bugbee says all 120 beds should be ready by the end of January.
