Governor`s Choir Selected | Video

Kristin Clouston | 11/29/2012

Here`s something to sing about. Horizon Middle School`s freshman choir is the governor`s official state chorus. This is really big news because they were up against high school, college and even adult choirs. The Governor`s Office has kept choir records since 1993 and since then, this is the youngest choir to earn the title.

"We knew it was a long shot because of our age and being a non-auditioned choir. We knew it would be a definite long shot. But I guess I kind of believe in long shots," said director Brian Saylor.

"We recorded our concert in November and than we sent in a little more recordings. We had to have a couple of recommendations also, so those were tough to get but we got them," said member Collin Poolman.

"About half of that guy section, this is their first experience ever in a choir. There`s no audition, they just walk in and sign up for it," Saylor said.

"I`m excited because usually kids our age don`t get to do that," said member Sidney Thompson.

"There`s such an energy at this age. They`re a great group of kids and they`re focused and they work really, really hard," Saylor said.

The choir will perform at the State of the State address on January 8 and at other functions during the year. Central-Cass is the Governor`s official band.
