Bismarck Tables Increased Garbage Rates | Video

Joel Porter | 11/27/2012

Residential garbage fees in Bismarck, for the time being, are safe. On Tuesday evening, city commissioners held off on supporting a plan to increase rates for residents as well as adding curbside recycling. Commissioners say they`d support either a gradual increase or a plan that includes apartment dwellers and people and businesses downtown.

Public works director Jeff Heintz is proposing a contract with Waste Management on a single sort recycling bin in which people could throw all of their recyclables, including paper, plastic, metal, cardboard and glass.

"The beauty of this new system that we`re recommending and negotiating with Waste Management right now is that it`s easy. And it accepts a lot of recycled waste. More than what we`re recycling right now," Heintz said.

"The current system costs me more money and aggravation than curbside recycling will. The only difference is the cost will be collected by the city directly instead of just paid out of my pocket," Bismarck resident Colleen Reinke said.

City commissioners will discuss the plan further at next month`s meeting.
