Halvorson said the investigation process is difficult because of his personal connection with the family. “When you do know the people, you have to take it the best that you can. But, you also know your heart is in it, you try to do what you can and show that you`re passionate.”
With the lack of information available, handling the situation has been even more difficult.
Marc Bluestone, Superintendent of New Town Public Schools said, “I think early on it was even more difficult because of all the information that was on Facebook and Twitter. Rumors that were flying out without any official word or an agency that would step up and help us with some decisions.”
Bluestone said the most important thing was to make sure New Town was safe. “Was the community secure and safe? Was the school secure and safe for the staff? We had unofficial statements, but nothing official.”
The investigation is now being turned over to the FBI and some say it could take up to weeks to find out what really happened. Halvorson said because this took place on the reservation, the FBI has jurisdiction at this time.
While no town should be forced to face a tragedy like this, New Town is hoping to become stronger and move forward.
