New Town Students Return to School | Video

Rene Thibault | 11/20/2012

Residents in New Town are trying to get back to a sense of normalcy in the wake of a senseless tragedy. School was back in session today. About 30 counselors, mental health workers and members of the New Town clergy were on hand to help kids deal with the loss of three of their fellow classmates.

The administration felt it was important to have the kids back interacting with each other, and the staff was happy with how the day went.

“You could feel the toughness within the school, as the school day got going it seemed like everyone loosened up. There`s still some issues as we work through them, but for the most part it seems like its gotten to be better than I anticipated when we first came in this morning,” said Andrew Detoeau, the New Town Middle School Principal.

Benjamin Schuster, 13, attended the middle school, while his siblings Julia, 10, and Luke, 6, went to the elementary school. All three, along with their grandmother were shot to death Sunday afternoon. Extra counselors will still be on hand when students return Monday from Thanksgiving break.
