Digging Out From Weekend Storm | Video

Evan Kruegel | 11/12/2012

Fresh snow hasn`t fallen in Williston in over 24 hours, but the remnants of the weekend storm are still prevalent across town. Plows are clearing main roads as fast as they can, but side streets are still in bad shape

Kyle Bergstrom has to make deliveries no matter what the weather is like, and while the roads are still in questionable shape, he says he`s seen a huge improvement in the past 24 hours.

"We just came from the warehouse to here, and it seems pretty decent today compared to yesterday and the day before," he said.

That sentiment was shared across town, as people returned to work after a snowy weekend.

"Last night we were on a side road, and it`s kind of hard to get through cause they haven`t plowed them and the snow`s pretty thick. But on the main roads it seems alright cause people have driven on them a lot," said Williston resident Maggie Jordan.

The Highway Patrol responded to four injury accidents over the weekend, and they felt lucky to have zero fatalities. While the worst of the storm is long gone, it could be a few days before the ice-covered roads can fully melt.

"It`s going to take some time to get the roads back into good driving conditions, so you have to watch for changing conditions every minute, or every mile," said Captain Alan Billehus.

The storm showed just how quickly road conditions can change.

"Well the snow came in a big hurry. With that, it gets compacted on the highway and can create very slippery conditions, so we just need people to slow down when that happens," added Billehus.

For locals, driving on icy roads is just another part of living in North Dakota.

"Just another day at the office, seen it my whole life pretty much," Bergstrom added.

"I don`t mind, as long as everyone else is careful I think it`s alright," said Jordan.
