MSU Enrollment Declines | Video

Amy Fox | 10/26/2012

Minot State University student enrollment is down seven percent from last spring. And the university saw similar trends this fall when enrollment dropped 2.7 percent.

Now the university is being forced to make some changes.

The university plans to cut three percent out of its 2012-2013 budget and another three percent cut will come next school year. With the future of enrollment and tuition costs unknown, MSU is optimistic about recovering from these tough times.

"We`re going to have to tighten our belt here on campus,” said Minot State University President David Fuller. “We`re going to have to free some of our hiring positions and our searches. We`re going to have to reduce our operational budgets where we can. Maybe hold on some technology purchases to do a number of things like that to recover some dollars."

While freshmen retention rates have dropped, the number of part-time students is increasing.
