Mandan Landfill Fire Update | Video

Alex Hagan | 10/26/2012

Public Works employees are trying to prevent a flare up at the Mandan Landfill. The fire started at around 9:30 last night and spread through most of the landfill. Mandan City and Rural Fire Departments responded. Public works employees say crews dropped a mix of garbage, soil and clay on top of the fire to douse the flames.

They say they believe some of the material in the landfill might have caused the fire.

"Initially this is all inert material and occasionally you do get a hot spot and again with the wind direction and the severity of the wind, we feel that it ignited and then spread pretty rapidly," said Mandan Public Works Director Jeff Wright.

Public works employees have been using earth moving equipment to shift dirt and garbage all day to prevent future fires.
