Fighting Sioux Sign Removed | Video

Valley News Live | 10/23/2012

The last of six "Home of the Fighting Sioux" signs was removed from the exterior of UND`s Engelstad Arena today. It`s part of the settlement with the NCAA to retire the nickname. New signs will go up that say, "Home of North Dakota Hockey."

Inside, the building will remain the same, including the massive logo embedded in the floor of the lobby.

Benefactor Ralph Engelstad had strong wishes that the nickname and logo remain, but a foundation board member says Engelstad would have accepted the settlement.

"Well, keep in mind that the symbol stays. So, I think Ralph Engelstad would say under the circumstances with what we were facing that this is a very responsible settlement," said Earl Strinden with the Engelstad Foundation.

Strinden adds that a special display is now being planned for the lobby that will tell the story of the nickname.

UND can`t implement a new nickname until 2015.
