Flood Insurance Claims | Video

Retha Colclasure | 10/23/2012

North Dakota`s congressional delegation has some good news for people whose homes were damaged by the Missouri River flood last year. Originally, FEMA had denied claims by people who bought their flood insurance policies between May 1 and June 6 after the Corps of Engineers had announced higher than usual releases from the Garrison Dam, but before the water hit.

That`s changing now.

"We pushed on FEMA to change that flood in progress date. They wouldn`t do it. So we wrote legislation and said look, you not only have to fix that problem for last year retroactively, you also have to fix it going forward so we don`t have this situation in the future," said Senator John Hoeven.

Homeowners affected by the change will be notified by the company they bought insurance from within the next few weeks and they can then resubmit their claim.
