Synthetic Drug Problems | Video

Valley News Live | 10/17/2012

Law enforcement agencies across the state agree that synthetic drugs are a big problem. But they say the laws on the books aren`t sufficient to fight them. Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem brought up the issue at a legislative committee meeting last week.

Today, the Grand Forks County sheriff says he`ll take the fight against synthetic drugs to the legislature in January. Sherrif Bob Rost says the state doesn`t have any laws to stop the manufacture and use of synthetic drugs, despite the deaths of two young men in Grand Forks this year.

So far, ten people have been charged.

"But really there`s no laws in the State of North Dakota that cover the use of these synthetic drugs and that`s why we`re going to the legislature coming up… to get some laws," Rost said.

Rost says there are some federal laws but it doesn`t really give local authorities any power to stop the manufacture and use of synthetic drugs.
