Heritage Center Prepares for More Construction | Video

The North Dakota Heritage Center will be closing the doors to its main gallery Sunday and won`t reopen until the fall of 2014. This weekend the Heritage Center is hosting a number of events to celebrate the renovations.

It`s also a chance for visitors to take one last look around the gallery before the familiar exhibits are replaced with new ones.

"Originally when the Heritage Center was designed the architects were told to be hidden on the Capitol grounds. They were very successful at that and we as a public area have found that a negative for how we would like to put North Dakota`s history in the forefront for our visitors," said Erik Holland, curator of education for the State Historical Society of North Dakota.

Holland says the expansion will make the Heritage Center more prominent on the Capitol grounds. Governor Jack Dalrymple and former Governor Allen Olson will mark the temporary closing of the Heritage Center in a ceremony Sunday at 4:30.
