ND Association of Counties Conference | Video

Roads, property taxes, and growth were some of the topics discussed at the North Dakota Association of Counties Annual Conference. Leaders from all 53 counties gathered to discuss what can be done better statewide.

It was standing room only during the property tax relief discussion at the counties conference.

Although Measure two was defeated, many commissioners still feel property taxes need some reform.

"We do have a surplus. And I think there`s a strong intent by the legislature and the governor to return some of those money`s back and subside property tax. Either we do it through the schools or we do it through an individual buy down," said Executive Director Mark Johnson.

Property taxes were just one of the topics brought up at the conference. Johnson says with a 41 percent increase in sales tax receipts across the state, it`s clear every county is growing. But now it`s time for the counties to maximize their opportunities.

"I hope they walk away with some best practices and finding ways that other counties are being successful and other may not be as successful and try to share that information."

Other highlights of the conference included a seat belt demonstration, and discussions on economics and medical costs for inmates.

The conference runs until Wednesday at the Ramkota Hotel in Bismarck.
