Groundbreaking for Williston`s New Rec Center | Video

Chris Williams | 10/8/2012
Construction started a few months ago on Williston`s new $72 million rec center, but today was a special day for the Parks and Rec Board as they had their groudbreaking ceremony.

"I think it makes a huge statement to the rest of the world saying, `Hey we care about our people. Williston is a great place to live, and if you come here we`re going to provide you with a quality of life that will be very appealing to you,`" said Mayor Ward Koeser.

The rec center is being built for people of all ages and the kids were thrilled about the building.

"Just everything. Everything just seems so ya know, amazing how they just put it together," said an excited Jamison Bervig.

For other kids, their trip to play at a rec center is going to be much shorter.

"We`ve always gone to Dickinson, and we`ve always loved it and wanted to stay there all day, and so I feel like we can do that here," said resident Baylee Hanson.

Kids weren`t the only ones that liked what they saw.

"This will be something that changes this from one of the fastest growing cities, to truly one of the best communities in America, and it`s a legacy that will be here for generations to come," said Congressman Rick Berg.

The rec center has been in the planning stages for awhile, but now it`s finally under construction. And some still find it hard to believe.

"I kind of can`t get over it. I pinch myself and say this is happening in Williston. I`ve always been a believer we want to do things right here, we want to do the best we can," Koeser added.

The building is scheduled to be complete by March of 2014.
