Over the last decade the rate of childhood obesity has continued to go up new studies show that one in three children across the country suffer is obese or overweight. Those children are at a higher risk for several medical conditions including asthma, type 2 diabetes, bone and joint problems and higher blood pressure.

The Missouri Family YMCA has teamed up with Sanford Health, St. Alexius Medical center and others to create a six week Mighty Kids program to help encourage families to live a healthy lifestyle and keep active.

"We want it to be a family program, we know that behavior starts in the home. So, it needs to be both the child and the whole family getting behind together. It needs to be a group effort," said YMCA Fitness Director Lindsey Peterson.

Classes start later this month and is geared towards children six and older. Those interested should contact Peterson at 255-1525 extension 156.
