New Technology for the Elderly | Video

Jessica Roose | 9/27/2012

Residents at the Good Samaritan Society are going to be testing new technology that`s designed to monitor their behavior and determine if and when there is a health concern. Various sensors are placed around the individuals home and the WellAWARE technology then monitors behavior, to see what is normal activity.

One sensor under the mattress monitors how well the person is sleeping and how often they get out of bed at night. Other sensors monitor how often they are coming in and out of the apartment.

"They might identify an emergic medical need like say it might be a UTI. But instead of waiting where they might get dehydrated, they might have to have an emergency room hospital visit. It might be caught sooner and they can proactively go to the hospital and be treated sooner, so it doesn`t get to that significant event, medical event for them," said customer experience consultant Kerry Conlin.

She says the Good Samaritan Society will begin using the devices in November.
