NCAA and UND Agreement | Video

Jessica Roose | 9/26/2012

It`s a good day for UND fans who like the old logo. The university will not have to get rid of all the Sioux images throughout Ralph Engelstad Arena and the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. A 2007 settlement with the NCAA had required that the imagery be removed in order for the school to be in compliance with NCAA rules.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem argued that it would cost the university too much money to do so. He said he was pleasantly surprised they were able to come to a workable agreement.

"We were able to achieve far more than I ever thought would be possible. That they simply agreed everything would be able to stay with that one exception and then even permit the construction of a commemorative wall to celebrate the history and relationships between the Sioux nation and the state of North Dakota and the University."

That one exception was for the sign on the outside of the arena that says "Home of the Fighting Sioux." It will need to be replaced.
