New Sidewalks Squeeze Some Properties | Video

Joel Porter | 9/11/2012

Sidewalks are not typically a hot button issue at a city meeting. However, a few residents living near Lions Park in Bismarck say new sidewalks would be paved only a few feet from the edge of their homes.

The city is required to put in new ramps and sidewalks in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The remaining streets that need work include blocks of North 19th, 20th and 23rd streets, as well as East Avenue D and Rosser Avenue.

"It is a situation where I think it`s every property owner`s civic duty to meet the ordinance and to make our community more walkable and friendly," Bismarck City Engineer Mel Bullinger said.

Homeowners will be assessed for the work done along their property.
