Governor Jack Dalrymple, in accordance with a presidential proclamation, has declared today Patriot Day and a Day of Service and Remembrance, to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks.
The flags at the capitol and across the state are being flown at half staff and will remain that way until sunset.
In Washington President Obama participated in a moment of silence on the white house lawn and attended a ceremony at the pentagon.
"So as painful as this day is and always will be, it leaves us with a lesson that no single event can ever destroy who we are."
