Standing Rock Protest | Video

Jessica Roose | 9/10/2012

Members of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe say they have had enough. Dozens picketed outside the federal building in Bismarck to call attention to what they say are ongoing abuses by the tribal council.

They say they have not been given the opportunity to voice their opinions on issues ranging from the Fighting Sioux logo to violations of the tribe`s code of ethics. And in April, they say the tribe received nearly $50 million from a trust fund settlement, and they`re upset that the tribal council wants to keep much of that money and only benefit those who live on the reservation.

"The tribe has nothing set aside to help people off the reservation. So the intent of this here is to get attention abut the Salazar settlement and about people having a voice on issues concerning what`s going on. Not only on Standing Rock but for all members," said Archie Foolbear with Active Citizens for Tribal Truth.

They say they hope legislators from North and South Dakota will get involved and help solve the issue.
