Hospital Renovates Children`s Center | Video

Michelle San Miguel | 9/9/2012

St. Alexius Medical Center is making room for even more patients. The hospital is moving its children`s center to a smaller unit on another floor to make room for the influx of adult patients coming through the door.

St. Alexius employees say many of the 11 beds in the children`s center go unused. By moving children to another floor, the hospital is adding nearly 30 beds in the adult medical unit. The new children`s center will carry the theme of Alex Town, named after the hospital`s mascot.

"The floor is gonna be a road that kids can bike up and down. Every room is going to have a different theme, like the fire station theme, the police station theme. All of the rooms are gonna be equipped with gaming systems, especially for the children that maybe can`t get out and be physically active because of whatever reason medically wise," said Kilee Harmon, development director for St. Alexius Medical Center Foundation.

Renovations to the children`s center are expected to cost close to a million dollars. The hospital will be holding a kickball tournament at the end of the month to help pay for the work. Teams will compete on Saturday, September 29.

September 10 is the deadline to register.

To register for the tournament, visit www.st.alexius.org then click on Foundation and choose St. Alexius Kickball Tournament.
