Fire Department Holds Open House | Video

Michelle San Miguel | 9/8/2012

Most of the firefighters in North Dakota are volunteers, including the ones at the Mandan Rural Fire Department. The department held an open house Saturday so people could get acquainted with what the firefighters do. It also gave the department a chance to recruit some more volunteers.

"If we`d get four or five more I suppose that would help cause there`s always people that can`t respond. They got jobs or they`re doing stuff with their kids and can`t come or whatever," said Chief Lynn Gustin.

"It`s mostly the adrenaline rush, the fun of it and helping others out," said Ryan Rivinius, who is interested in being a volunteer with the fire department.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol brought out its rollover simulator so children could see firsthand the importance of wearing a seatbelt.
