The morning rush before school is a hectic time for many parents and students. But in the early morning chaos, it`s important for students to find time to eat breakfast.
"If their minds are on their stomach they really can`t focus on what the instructors are trying to teach them. If they had a more balanced breakfast with some protein and some fruit and some cereal then that could sustain them for a long time," said licensed registered dietician Nicole Enzmiger.
Before classes start, it`s a good idea to check online what the school is serving for lunch. That way, if students don`t like what`s on the menu, they can pack a lunch.
If you are packing a sandwich for lunch, Enzminger recommends using whole wheat bread or whole grain white bread and adding some fruits and vegetables on the side.
"Fruits and vegetables help to provide a lot of color to the meal which it makes it more interesting and different colors of fruits and vegetables provide benefits for your health."
Enzminger says the key is to introduce your children to these healthy options at home so they`re more likely to eat it at school.
Enzminger adds that it`s important for parents to establish good-eating patterns for their children since kids usually have their eating habits set by the time they`re six.
