Observing Sawyer Flood Plan | Video

Jenny Castro | 8/9/2012

The towns of Sawyer and Velva are positioned downstream from Minot. Although they had more time to protect their communities from last summer`s flood, they`re still concerned about recovery and prevention.

In Sawyer, they`re still recovering from the waters that breeched their levees last summer. They are also looking for help from FEMA to put a long term flood recovery plan in place.

Congressman Rick Berg met with town leaders and the Minot City Engineer to figure out the short term and long term needs.

"Obviously, meeting with the commission members you can see there`s a very strong desire and concern that we need to protect our community long term, both from the water and ensure that we have access to transportation,” he said.

During the flood, the Corps of Engineers spent one million dollars for temporary levee construction in Sawyer and $500,000 in Velva.
