State Fair Employee Honored | Video

For one Minot man, the North Dakota State Fair is very special this year.

One year ago, Gaylen Schmidt put his life on the line to save the state fair grounds.

Schmidt jumped into the water with sand bags to reinforce the dike.

Today, he`s being honored with the Summer of Hope Hero award for his selfless efforts.

"It was really a surprise to me and what I did was nothing extraordinary as far as I thought, simply because the whole fair crew was her and was just part of a team effort to save the grandstand at the time," said Schmidt.

The award was given by the Souris Valley Long Term Recovery Committee.
