Where Are The Women? | Video

Jessica Roose | 7/11/2012

Members of the North Dakota Women`s Network want the answer to a simple question: "Where are the Women?" The state ranks 45th for the number of women in the legislature.

We didn`t always rank so low. The state was the first to have a woman as Speaker of the House in the legislature. North Dakota was also the first state to elect a woman to a statewide office.

Now only one woman holds a statewide position.

There are also 23 state boards that have no women serving on them, which they say violates the state century code.

"They`re supposed to be gender balanced in relation to the population being served and that I don`t think is taking place. So it would be nice if on the Governor`s website there would be an indication of what that gender balance should be and what that gender balance is," said North Dakota Women`s Network Consultant Linda Johnson Wurtz.
