How does a nice run sound for the start of your holiday? It may not be everyone`s idea of fun, but this year`s Fourth of July Zoo Run has a handful of people registered.
"Basically, it`s only going to be on hour, hour and a half and you`re out of there, rest of the day is good to do whatever you got planned and you get a chance to see some of the changes that have already taken place at the park,” said chairman Lee Hornaday.
Pre-registration is at 6:45 a.m., the run is at 8:00. Particiapants get a 2011 T-shirt because they didn`t get to use them due to the flood.
Also starting at 8:00 is the Festival of the Parks at the Scandinavian Heritage Park. This event is a day full of music, entertainment, food and even a bouncy castle for the kids.
"Absolutely free. There are going to be venders that will be there to provide the food. For example, if you want breakfast, you do have to pay for it and if you want lunch you`ll have to purchase that also,” said event organizer Terri Aldrich.
"The buildings are open on the premises on the park and the Scandinavian Heritage Association will provide volunteers to give tours of the buildings,” said event organizer Steve Veikley.
An extra special event in Minot this year is Soaring Over the Souris, a free air show for the community. The show features a comedic air act with Jelly Belly stunt pilot Kent Pietch and the world-famous Canadian Snowbirds, who are happy to volunteer their time during the holiday.
"To come down to the states for Independence Day, that`s a real honor and a privilege for the team,” said public affairs officer Thomas Edelson.
The snowbird display features nine aircrafts in the sky, flying in very close formations.
"It`ll be a very dynamic show, both speed and power and grace and beauty all at the same time," Edelson said.
To cap off the night, the air show will feature a Fourth of July fireworks display.
The Soaring Over the Souris Air Show will be on Wednesday evening, from 6:00 to 11:00 at the Minot Airport. The gates open at 3:00.
Don`t worry about parking, several shuttles will be taking people to the show. The shuttle locations will be at MLT north of the airport, ING near the North Hill Soccer Complex, and the Minot State Dome. The buses will run from 3:00 to 7:00 and then again from 10:00 to midnight.
