"Patients used to call, there`d be a note taken by the front desk, that would go back to the nurse, the nurse would call the patient, the patient tells them what`s going, we present it to the doctor, and then they call the patient back," said Clinic Nurse Manager Melanie Krabseth.
But that`s all about to change with the introduction of the nurse triage department. Nurses will be able to assess your situation before you even come to the hospital, saving time and space.
"I`ve had 17 years of EMS experience, but this teaches you how to prioritize. Really triage means we`re going to prioritize. We will see what needs to be done and then take it from there," said ER/Triage Nurse Roxie Larson.
The nurses will combine their medical knowledge with computer software to assess potential patients.
"With that format, it`s going to show us how to do a little more of the prioritizing - using our knowledge but also using what comes up on that screen. And that`s a better way to process what`s happening with that patient and then going on from there and making our recommendation. Or Involving their physician and saying here`s what I have, what are your thoughts on this," Larson said.
Craven-Hagan has been testing out the nurse triage unit already, and likes the results.
"I see a much more relaxed atmosphere with our doctors and their nurses. We`re taking that workload off of them, and our expertise is raised up a little higher because we have the RN status but we have this experience as well. So I see a little more calmness and it`s nice to see that," Larson said.
If you`re faced with an emergency medical situation, dial 911 or head straight to the clinic. But If you aren`t sure what`s wrong and you just need some expertise, give the nurse triage unit a call.
