Displaced residents aren`t the only ones in Minot having trouble finding affordable housing right now. More college students are looking to stay on campus this upcoming fall and even this summer. A lot of students are taking that option instead of renting an apartment.

After one or two years of college, a lot of students usually take that next step towards adulthood and look to transition to an apartment, but not anymore.

"I know mostly of guys living on campus because they can`t find a place,” said Glyn Borel, a junior a Minot State University.

"Past years it was maybe perceived to be a little bit less expensive to live in an apartment off campus then to have room and board. Now that perspective has shifted and it is definitely a more economical option to live on campus,” says Lisa Ericksmoen, Director of Student Life at Minot State.

In the past, campus housing during the summer has only been available to students taking classes. This year the university is renting out Olympic trailers, which were purchased last year after the flood.

The rent is just over $400 for a single room and the students don`t have to be enrolled in summer classes.

Without that housing option available, a lot of students say that they`d probably have to leave Minot for the summer because they just can`t afford any other rent in town.

"I probably wouldn`t be in Minot, I probably would`ve stayed home,” said student Thomas Salery.

"I wouldn`t know who to live with or where to live,” said Borel.

Just north of the campus trailers, Francesca DeAngelis says she got lucky for the summer and is living in a house, filling the spot of a student who left for the summer.

"A lot of places it was going to be like $700 for your own bedroom. It was ridiculous expensive."

Francesca is gearing up for her last basketball season at Minot State and wanted to stay here so she could use the Dome facilities just across the street and get workouts from the trainers.

"Back at home I don`t have any of that and I don`t have a car so it`s just easier here."

This fall, students also have the newly constructed Beaver Suites available on 8th street as an affordable option. These apartments are managed the IMM rental company are available for students, faculty, and staff.

There is no deadline to apply for residence housing at Minot State University. Part-time and online students are also eligible for this housing, but full time students have priority.
