ND ELCA Comes Out Against Measure 3

| 6/5/2012

Another group has come out against Measure 3, claiming we already have religious liberty ensured by both the state and federal constitutions. The North Dakota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America passed a resolution expressing grave concern with the measure.

The primary author of the resolution, Reverend Tim Johnson from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, says the wording is too vague, particularly with what is considered a burden.

"I`m desperately for freedom of religion only if it doesn`t impinge on somebody else`s. I think the possibility of this amendment is that it will go past the boundaries that divide us and keep the peace between us," he said.

Supporters say the measure is needed to ensure that certain religious freedoms are not infringed upon by the government.

Johnson says there will be an informational and table discussion on both sides of the issue on Sunday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck from 9:45 to 12:15.
