Some eastern Tennessee bluegrass music made its way down to the Standing Rock Reservation, as the band Blue Moon Rising performed for students at Standing Rock. While the concert might have been the highlight of the day for many of the students (after all, they got out of class for it) it wasn`t the only thing they were excited about. Bluegrass musicians donated ten new guitars to the music program for students to use
Bluegrass music isn`t new to Johnny Eagle Shield, who likes to listen to it, even though he says he can`t play it.
"I`ve tried, it`s kinda hard, moves too fast."
He does enjoy watching others play it though, and says he enjoyed today`s concert.
"I like bluegrass, grew up, my dad listens to it."
Other students at Standing Rock High don`t listen to bluegrass much, and today`s concert was a chance for them to take home a unique experience.
"I had my camera and I was zooming in on all the finger picking work and it was really impressive. I got a couple shots of some of the kids in the audience going like this with their heads, they were getting in to it, and some of the younger kids were really enjoying the guitar and stringed instruments that they`re not exposed to."
After the concert, the band gave the school ten new guitars, which teachers say will really help out their music program.
"We`ve had guitars come and go in the past. When I first got here, we had hardly any guitars."
Now the kids can try their own hand at bluegrass or any other type of music.
"A lot of them know how to play already and we hope they can take them home and practice on them and learn how to use them."
Something that Johnny and many other students are looking forward to.
