Juli McDonald | 6/7/2010

Bosses and business owners have a lot to worry about, but one of the most important things they need to focus on is how to keep their workers healthy and safe.

Medcenter One`s Occupational Health Clinic offers services for businesses both at their clinic and on job sites. From drug testing to pulmonary function and asbestos exams, the clinic aims to make the work environment safer for everyone.

For some people, getting up and going to work everyday is more risky than for others. They might work with heavy machinery or in an area with poor air quality. But whether you`re working in a dangerous job or even as a cashier, occupational health clinics like Medcenter One`s can meet your working needs -- all under the same roof.

"Before, if somebody were to get injured they`d likely have to go to another place for physical therapy, where the occupational health setting you can see a provider and get immediate treatment for this injury right away and then everybody`s on the same page," said Jeff Wetzel, Medcenter One`s Occupational Health Clinic executive director.

The occupational health clinic does a lot of business with oil companies who need to make sure their employees are healthy enough to work in potentially hazardous areas.

"Pulmonary function test is part of a respiratory clearance exam," said Kyle Darras, FNP-C. "We recommend respiratory clearance exams for employees who will be wearing respiratory protection to do their jobs. It ensures they`ll be safe while doing the physical demands of their job while wearing a respirator."

The clinic strives to prevent work related injuries, but if workers do get hurt, they can also benefit from other services as they heal.

"They can come to our clinic for an evaluation by a medical provider. We`re also able to do any needed testing: blood testing, chest x-rays, a thorough exam or maybe even referral to a specialist if we do determine they have had some lung damage.

Wetzel says all businesses can benefit from occupational health regardless of their size. Every company is at risk for work related injuries, and everyone should strive for a healthy working environment.
