All the holiday cooking this time of year creates an increased risk of starting fires in your home. The National Fire Protection Association is calling on all cooks to take extra safety precautions Thursday. Thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking fires and cooking in general, is the number one cause of fires in the home. According to the NFPA, firefighters respond to roughly three times the daily average of fires Thanksgiving Day. To avoid this disaster during the holidays, Minot Rural Fire Chief Rex Wltikol has a few simples tips.
"Basically you just need to pay attention to what`s going on, with all the excitement and people visiting, things get forgotten pretty easily," says Weltikol.
The NFPA says that if a fire does start in the kitchen, you should use the lid of your pan to smother the flames, turn off the heat, and keep the oven door closed and when in doubt, you should leave your house and close the door to contain the fire.
