Fire departments also respond to carbon monoxide calls and say carbon monoxide detectors are just as important as a smoke detector.
In light of Tuesday`s apartment evacuation in Jamestown because of the toxic gas, officials in Minot cannot stress enough how critical a carbon monoxide detector can be.
Although there is no code mandating homeowners and landlords to install detectors, Minot`s fire marshall says every home should have at least one carbon monoxide detector.
"Carbon monoxide detectors first of all should be mounted outside the sleeping rooms," Ed Hausauer said. "We are most at risk when we are sleeping. If you would have a buildup of carbon monoxide while you were sleeping, the carbon monoxide would send you into a deeper sleep and you would not arise from that sleep."
The fire marshall says if you have a carbon monoxide detector, it should be replaced every five years.
And just like a smoke detector change the batteries each year.
