The Agriculture Department says dozens of states are not properly administering food stamp programs designed to provide food to low-income Americans.
A USDA letter to state administrators, obtained by The Associated Press, says complex and difficult enrollment practices in some states have not served clients or taxpayers well.
USDA released an annual report on food stamp enrollment and eligibility on Tuesday. The report, which covers the year 2007, says only 18 states enrolled 70 percent or more of those eligible for food stamps.
North Dakota`s participation rate is estimated at 62 percent, among the bottom 20 states.
Two states - Wyoming and California - had fewer than 50 percent of those eligible enrolled to receive food stamps. The most successful state was Missouri, where nearly 100 percent of those eligible received government aid. |
